Early Access to Version 4

As part of "Improve my Game Jam", I have rebuilt the game. However, so issue during the rebuild occurred, so what is posted is an early rebuild version. There are bugs and unfinished parts, but the core of the game with the Power Up mechanic has been added. I hope to finish the rest of the rebuild within two weeks.

Update 3 - The Mushroom Dilemma.

In one minute the hamster has to fill his pouch with as many peanuts as his little pouch can hold, but as his pouch fills he will slow down.

But beware of the mushrooms, they will stun if eaten, but multiple if left unchecked.

Instructions

Using a joypad or WASD to move the hamster around to grab all the nuts by moving over them.

A high score above 1000 is good.

Dev Log

This is my first entry to a game jam, I am new to game development and still learning the Unity Engine. For this project, I focused on the gameplay and its core mechanic using a simple cubist style.

Hours: The game's core concept took 3 hours to develop, but attempts to add sound and polishing added far too many hours to the project.

Development Team: Just myself, all the code, design, and sounds were produced by me.

This is the first game that I submitted to TriJam. The concept of this game was coded relatively quickly; however, adding sound correcting screen size display issues took far longer than I hoped for. The part following the classic 90/10 rule, the last 10% of software development, took 90% of the time.

I'm pleased with the final game, although I welcome feedback, particularly any bugs or glitches that I missed. One of the issues I struggled with is the difference in the final presentation between the webGL on itch io playing in the unity development. I have a lot to learn. Feedback is most welcome

I look forward to applying myself to future game jams as I find it an excellent way to focus on what I have been learning the last few weeks.

I will return to this project after the Trijam has finished, I already have several updates ready, including an improved graphic for peanut, as seen in the banner.

Update Comming Soon

During the submission and voting phase, I received a lot of good feedback. There many many improvements, and bug fixes.

  • Improved visuals, like, but kept the minimalistic cubist style.
  • A new mushroom object, that if not eaten in a certain amount of time will bust and spawn more, but in eating a mushroom will stun the hamster for a short duration.
  • Powerup drops that will grant the hamster a temporary boost, like increased speed.

So look out for updates during the weekend.

Okay, since this jam is about improving, I'll not tell you about the current state of the game, only how to improve it:

  • Add sounds
  • Add goals
  • Maybe add moving enemies
  • Make movement more realistic, "dragging" a mouse a little bit at the turns

Finding I lost the previous build, I had to build the whole game from scratch.

  • I lost all previous sound effects and did not have the time to recreate them for this jam. They will be added in the next patch.
  • "Add Goal" did you mean to add a goal for development or for the game itself? If it was the game development, then yes, I did lose time on development that was not in the original Devblog improvement. The latter game goal was left out due to time constraints was adding an effective UI menu that would include instructions and the game's goal.
  • It is designed on paper but would have been too ambitious to do on rebuild. In the latter part of 1 min, gameplay snake would enter.
  • The movement, I was ok with the part. Adding dragging would be good to do. I will probably develop that at the same time I redesign movement animation.

Thanks very much for the feedback.

Sounds great, good luck!

And sorry to feel about your build :(

Good for a first gamejam submission! The game mechanic of character slowing down with higher score made it a really good challenege.

Addictive game, although didn't manage to get a score above 750.

Speaking of bugs, the D button doesn't seem to work. Arrow keys worked fine tho.

Thanks for the feedback, I got some updates ready, so I'll check out "d" button.

Sorry! The "d" not working turned out to be my browser issue.

No worries ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜
